Informed media coverage is creating greater recognition of depression, anxiety and related substance-use disorders as a serious national health problem. Print, electronic and web-based media are helping to change social attitudes and reduce the stigma of depression.

beyondblue can put journalists in touch with people who can tell the stories of their direct personal experience of depression. Reporting the experience of Australians who live with depression is increasing awareness of its symptoms, causes and treatments.

beyondblue's research provides media with facts and figures that demonstrate the magnitude of the problem, what needs to be done and what is being achieved. Issues that beyondblue can comment on include:

  • depression in young people across a variety of settings, including schools
  • anxiety
  • depression and how it overlaps with other illnesses e.g. heart disease, asthma, alcohol and drug use
  • bipolar disorder
  • depression in Australian adults
  • postnatal depression
  • depression education and training in the workplace
  • clinical, medical, psychological treatment
  • mental health reform
  • education and training for General Practitioners
  • depression in Indigenous communities
  • depression in older people
