10 October 2002, Melbourne

beyondblue played an active role at the World Mental Health Day forum which was officially launched by the then Minister for Health and Ageing, The Honourable Kay Patterson. The theme for World Mental Health Day was the importance of children's mental health, with the national theme being 'Reduce Tears, Increase Cheers".

The day provided an excellent opportunity to draw attention to the ever-increasing incidence of mental health problems in young people and to showcase the opportunities for prevention and early intervention.

As a consequence of beyondblue's involvement, wider national media attention was attracted and greater dissemination of material was possible than in previous years.

"It is only by working collaboratively across government and professional boundaries that we will be able to improve the mental health of children in Australia." Mr John McGrath, Chair 1997-2002, Mental Health Council of Australia.
