beyondblue celebrity team wins televised charity netball match

Channel 10 sports commentator Luke Darcy has done beyondblue proud by leading his blue team to victory in a penalty shoot out during a celebrity netball match on Sunday June 21.

The Netball Australia Festival of the Stars Celebrity Charity Match was held at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre and broadcast live across the country on Network Ten.

Darcy led the beyondblue team and former netball champ and fellow commentator Liz Ellis captained the pink team, who played for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

With the scores tied at full time, Darcy applied the concentration skills that made him an AFL champion to the netball court to score the winning goal. His teammates included comedian Wil Anderson, his former Western Bulldogs teammate Chris Grant, Olympic silver medalist Melissa Wu and INXS band member Kirk Pengilly.

Liz Ellis' team included media personality Adam Spencer, rugby union player John Eales, world champion surfer Layne Beachley and broadcaster Bill Woods.

beyondblue CEO Leonie Young says the Festival of Stars Celebrity Match builds on the valuable relationship forged between beyondblue and Netball Australia in mid-2008 to bolster their shared commitment to tackling depression and anxiety in the sporting community.

"We welcome the national Looking Beyond partnership with Netball Australia. This televised match was a great opportunity to get our message across to hundreds of thousands of Australians. We thank Netball Australia for its continuing support, the celebrities who generously donated their time to play and the sponsors Holden and ANZ," Ms Young said.

"Not only was it a great match to watch - with both teams neck and neck for the entire game - but it also helped beyondblue get the message out that depression and anxiety disorders can affect any of us at any time, but help and effective treatments are available.

"While of course, we congratulate Luke Darcy and his blue team on their win, we also applaud Liz Ellis and her NBCF pink team for the excellent competition."

To commemorate the inaugural Netball's Festival of Stars, two framed dresses signed by all the celebrities featured in the Celebrity Charity Match are now up for auction on eBay, with proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and beyondblue.

The auction closes on Tuesday, June 30 at 9pm.
