ABC Sports and Rugby League Commentator Craig Hamilton proved to be a big drawcard at the beyondblue Community Forum on depression held in Adelaide on October 10, with close to 300 people attending to hear him speak. Other speakers at the forum included beyondblue Deputy CEO Nicole Highet, Dr Cate Howell from the University of Adelaide's Department of General Practice, MC Mark Aiston from Network 10, and members of the local community.
Craig's Story
For Craig Hamilton, who experienced a breakdown on the eve of the Sydney Olympic Games and was eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder, recovery is an ongoing process. Living with condition means that he has to pay attention to his diet, his sleep and his stress levels.
"I look after myself a lot better now than before I was hospitalised," Craig told the attentive audience. "This is why it is so important people get help if they think they might be depressed."
Dr Nicole Highet, beyondblue Deputy CEO, spoke about beyondblue's efforts to raise awareness and reduce the stigma associated with depression. She discussed the range of treatments available and emphasised the importance of people seeking help as early as possible.
The main Safari vehicle, a Winnebago motor home was parked outside the Adelaide venue prior to and during the public meeting. Many people took advantage of the opportunity to use the beyondblue computers on board to check out the signs and symptoms of depression in themselves and others.
At the conclusion of the forum, Craig was surrounded by people wanting to thank him for his words of encouragement and seeking autographed copies of his book Broken Open.
