Evaluation report Andrews, G. Burns, J. Cadd, M. Cashmore, J. Corry, J. Gould, B. Hickie, I. Mullen, P. Oates, K. (14th July 2002) Child Sexual Abuse. Deliberations of an expert group convened by beyondblue: the National Depression Initiative.

In response to the increased media coverage of childhood sexual abuse and its long-term impact on the mental health of adults, beyondblue formed an expert committee chaired by Professor Gavin Andrews to make recommendations regarding a community response to this issue. The committee released a report, 14 July 2002 that argued that child sexual abuse is always wrong and a significant public health problem in Australia. Well-conducted studies have confirmed that child sexual abuse places individuals at an increased risk for mental disorders.

The committee recommended that clear pathways to enable victims to access treatment for depression, anxiety and substance-use related disorders are needed. Additional research would better inform the best way to treat children who are recent victims of child sexual abuse to prevent future psychopathology. Exploration of low-cost treatments, such as computerised cognitive behavioural therapy, may increase coverage and reduce the stigma associated with conventional treatment.
