    Description:

The Anxiety Disorders Association of Victoria Presents
Don't Panic: You Can Overcome Anxiety Without Drugs

A Lecture with Dr. Sallee McLaren Clinical psychologist and author

This lecture will discuss Dr. Sallee McLaren's book and offer a practical alternative to medication:
    • Panic attacks, phobias, extreme shyness, and general anxiety disrupt the lives of an estimated 15 percent of the population.
    • Typically, these kinds of problems are diagnosed, often without evidence, as being caused by a biochemical imbalance that requires rebalancing through medication. The result, very often, is an endless psychiatric revolving-door syndrome.
    • Understanding what anxiety is and how it is caused offers alternatives to medication.
    • This lecture will explore this book and offer proven ways for individuals to change their lives for the better - permanently and without drugs.

Dr Sallee McLaren is a doctor of clinical psychology. She has worked in private practice for many years, helping hundreds of her patients recover completely from anxiety and many related forms of emotional distress, all without medication. She is the consulting psychologist for the Anxiety Disorders Association of Victoria (ADAVIC) in Australia, and comments frequently in the media on ways to recover from distress.

Name of event:Living Calm from Stillness - Meditation for the Effective Relief of Stress and Anxiety: A Workshop for Mental Health Professionals
    Time:10.00 am to 4.00pm (9.30 am registration)
Location:Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre Corner Bell Street and St. Georges Road, Preston, VIC. (Melways Ref. 30 / E1)
    Description:

    LIVING CALM FROM STILLNESS
Meditation for the effective relief of stress and anxiety

A workshop for Mental Health professionals

By Pauline McKinnon, Psychotherapist and Author, founding director of the Stillness Meditation Centre in Melbourne.

    Overview:
This workshop focuses upon the prevention, relief or recovery from the symptoms which lead to anxiety disorders. Participants will gain a new understanding of anxiety management and in particular, the individual's ability to personally manage their anxiety. Such empowerment also provides clients with the possibility of less reliance on medication and the awakening of insights to assist the process of psychotherapy.

    Background:
This workshop will introduce professionals to Stillness Meditation, a simple and effective therapeutic modality. Physiologically based, this meditative approach was originated in 1950's by the eminent psychiatrist Dr Ainslie Meares, 1910-1976, (Relief Without Drugs, 1968), who dedicated his life's work to the natural management of anxiety. Pauline McKinnon is internationally known as the author of In Stillness Conquer Fear and is the Founding Director of The Stillness Meditation Centre in Melbourne.
From almost 30 years' experience in teaching stillness in the Meares tradition, the aim of this workshop is to assist participants in understanding the theory and principles of Meares' unique approach. This form of meditation, now known as Stillness Meditation Therapy (S.M.T.™), is not related to culture, philosophy or religion.

    Workshop Objective:
At this workshop participants will learn the rationale behind Meares' hypothesis relating to the natural management of stress and anxiety. His theory and structure surrounding the use of meditation will be explored and experienced. One or more experiential sessions in Stillness Meditation will take place with time allowed for questions. While maintaining individual privacy where desired, some personal sharing and some involvement in group discussion can be expected within the objective of greater learning.

    Potential Benefits:
When correctly integrated into one's own life, it becomes possible to successfully facilitate stillness to others. The major outcome of Stillness Meditation is a naturally lowered anxiety level and the relief of distressing symptoms through the profound experience of mental rest. Ultimately, a more peaceful state of being emerges so that one becomes a model for living calm and can exemplify this to patients and clients.

    Target Audience:
As this workshop is directed to professional development it is expected that attendees would be comprised of registered psychologists, general practitioners, social workers and family therapists.

    Presenter:
Pauline McKinnon is founding director of The Stillness Meditation Centre in Melbourne and has more than 25 years' experience in providing relief for anxiety sufferers. She is internationally known for her pioneering book, In Stillness Conquer Fear, which brought public awareness to the many anxiety disorders recognised today. Having successfully overcome her personal 8 year anxiety challenge and converted her experience into the life-enriching path of assisting others, she is foremost a powerful testimony to a unique concept of meditation. Her training in counselling and family therapy (she is a Clinical Member of the Victorian Association of Family Therapists and a member of the PACFA register) complements her expertise as a meditation teacher.
As well as personal experience Pauline draws upon the wisdom of years in assisting and supporting clients in their own journey of change. She is committed to her goal of reducing anxiety in society and is dedicated to research in this field and related modalities including philosophy and theology. She has also published books and audio CD's relating to meditation and anxiety management with an emphasis on preventative health care for all age groups. She is an accomplished presenter and the style of her workshops is relaxed, informative and engaging with just a touch of fun.

School refusal is a complex and common issue in our society affecting up to 5% of children, and is stressful for the child, their family and the school. The more time the child is away from school, the more difficult it is for the child to resume normal school life. If school refusal becomes an ongoing issue it can negatively impact the child's social and educational development.

This information session will provide parents and teachers with an understanding of this complex issue and will provide them with a range of strategies they can use to assist their children back to school.

    This information session will address:

    What is school refusal?
    How common is it?
    Types of school refusers.
Why children refuse to go to school?
The symptoms school refusers present with.
Short and long term consequences of school refusal.
    Things to consider in assessment.
What parents can do (practical strategies)
What schools and other professionals can do

Joanne Garfi is a psychologist with 23 years experience and expertise in child and adolescent issues. She has 8 years experience as a school psychologist, working in both primary and secondary schools providing specialist training to teachers. She has special interests in the treatment of Anxiety and Panic Disorder and is well known for her work with school refusal, childhood anxiety, behavioural disorders and developmental issues. She utilizes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and skills development and prefers to take a whole person approach to treatment. Her emphasis when working with children is to have families and schools working together to bring about change.
