Bicycle Victoria and beyondblue: the national depression initiative today announced a joint campaign to encourage all Victorians to tackle depression and go for a bike ride to mark World Mental Health Day (Sunday 10 October).
"Exercise isn't only good for your physical health, it's good for your mental health too," said Leonie Young, Chief Executive of beyondblue, speaking about the 'Bike to beat the blues' campaign.
"Depression is a serious illness which affects one in five people in Australia, but it's treatable and preventable. There's a wide range of effective treatments available, including psychological treatments, alternative therapies and medication. Taking part in a physical activity such as cycling has also been shown to be highly beneficial in the prevention and management of depression and anxiety."
Australian actor and beyondblue board member Garry McDonald, who has a long-term anxiety disorder, said: "We're encouraging everybody to get out on their bikes this Sunday to mark World Mental Health Day. The theme of this year's event is the link between physical and mental health so it's a great reason to get out, have fun and do something healthy. It's time to get those endorphins moving!"
Harry Barber, General Manager of Bicycle Victoria, said: "This is our prescription for World Mental Health Day. Get your kids or call a friend and ride your bikes to somewhere scenic where they sell good ice-cream and remind yourself what life is all about."
