Young people, drugs and mental health: care factor zero
New research conducted by the University of Melbourne published in this month's Medical Journal of Australia shows that young people are continuing to abuse drugs even though most are aware that this could damage their mental health.
This research is vital as it helps us to refine our approaches to the problems of young people with mental illness who also use drugs and alcohol.
beyondblue research and international studies have clearly established that the use of illicit drugs and alcohol are often the precursor to depression and anxiety and can be the trigger for acute mental illness.
This new study importantly shows that young people with the highest levels of psychological distress are less likely to see their substance use as harmful. We encourage all clinicians who see young people for depression and anxiety to talk to them about their understanding of the effect drug and alcohol use has on their mental health.
beyondblue and its Chairman, Jeff Kennett, categorically state that there is no such thing as a recreational drug and that all drugs have the potential to harm.
As a priority, we are working with governments, clinicians, parents and young people to address this critical issue. Without concerted action, drugs, alcohol and depression can destroy the lives of many Australian young people and their families.
For information about depression, anxiety and related drug and alcohol problems, call the beyondblue info line on 1300 22 4636 or visit www.beyondblue.org.au
