Central Queensland

The National Roadshow team rolled into the Central Queensland Medicare Local region at the start of October 2014 – minus the big blue bus.

After travelling 34,000km in six months, Roadshow Rhonda was left behind in Ingham for some important mechanical attention while the team soldiered on and travelled south. Fortunately, Rhonda’s younger brother (a mini bus) was on standby and hit the road from Melbourne to meet the team in Yeppoon.

Beaman Park, Yeppoon, was the first stop on Wednesday 1 October. Beyond Blue staff, now in possession of the smaller Beyond Blue bus, spoke to locals about depression, anxiety and importance of taking action.

It was then on to Rockhampton where the Rockhampton South Rotary Club hosted a depression awareness breakfast on 2 October. Beyond Blue Ambassador Craig Hamilton shared his personal experience of hope, recovery and resilience at the sold-out breakfast.

That afternoon, the team set up at Stockland Rockhampton Shopping Centre to provide free Beyond Blue information materials to shoppers. That team then moved into the centre’s movie theatre for a special screening of The Sunnyboy, a film that shows the journey of Jeremy Oxley, lead singer of the Sunnyboys and his 30-year battle with schizophrenia.

The next day, the Roadshow team attended a free community morning tea at the Red Cross Walali Neighbourhood Centre. That afternoon – 3 October – visitors to the main street of Rockhampton were provided with free Beyond Blue information.

The tour of the Central Queensland Medicare Local region wrapped up in Gladstone on Saturday 4 October with a visit to Stockland Gladstone Shopping Centre. The team then headed into the Wide Bay Medicare Local region.

Thanks to the wonderful communities who gave Beyond Blue such a warm welcome! Thanks also to Medibank Community Fund for their support.
