Darling Downs-South West Queensland

The big blue bus arrived in the Darling Downs-South West Queensland Medicare Local region at the end of August, 2014.

First stop was St George on Sunday 31 August. The Roadshow team was up bright and early to attend the St George Tennis Club Open Tournament. Players were able to swing by the bus between matches and pick up free Beyond Blue resources. The bus then set up at the busy intersection of Grey Street and Carnarvon Highway in St George. Many motorists took the opportunity to pull over, have a chat and take home some information.

On September 3 the Roadshow arrived in Warwick for a garden party at the Leslie Park Rotunda with headspace Warwick. The lovely weather, combined with music and a free afternoon tea, attracted dozens of locals.

The bus then headed to Toowoomba for a chat n’ check at Art Gallery Park on Thursday 4 September. That evening, the team hosted a free screening of Magic in the Moonlight at The Strand Cinemas. Prior to the screening, the 160 attendees were treated to an exhibition of entries in the ‘Healthy Snaps! Women Taking 1 step for better mental health’ photo competition. Darling Downs- South West Queensland Medicare Local CEO Andrew Harvey spoke to the audience and encouraged everyone to make a mental health pledge.

The next morning the Roadshow set up at Bell Street Mall. The Toowoomba Lions Club cooked up a free community barbecue and cups of delicious lemongrass, ginger and mint 'blue' iced tea were available.

On Saturday 6 September the bus attended the monthly Nanango Markets. Free Beyond Blue showbags were available for the hundreds of shoppers and stallholders and Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington MP dropped by to say hello.

Following the markets the team headed to Kingaroy, the community that petitioned Beyond Blue to bring the bus to its town. A free barbecue was held in Kingaroy Memorial Park with local support groups Pathway2Hope and Seeds of Hope. Beyond Blue speaker Eddie Sloan shared his experience of depression and recovery.

Thanks to all the wonderful communities who gave Beyond Blue such a warm welcome! Thanks also to Medibank Community Fund for their support.
