A number of activities were held in late 2013 in the Eastern Melbourne Medicare Local (EMML) region – the first trial site for the Beyond Blue National Roadshow.
On 10 November 2013 Beyond Blue got to meet festival-goers at the Maroondah Festival, Croydon. The annual festival attracted 25,000 people, with many of them stopping by Beyond Blue’s marquee it shared with headspace Knox and EMML to pick up free information resources.
Later that month, the trio of organisations united again and spent two days (29 and 30 November) at Westfield Knox Shopping Centre. Shoppers were invited to put a mental health ‘chat and check’ on their to-do list and encouraged to familiarise themselves with the facts around depression and anxiety, and find out what support is available locally.
The tranquil surrounds of Warburton, nestled in the Yarra Ranges, was the location of Beyond Blue’s third visit (3 December) in the EMML region. Beyond Blue was lucky enough to participate in a wonderful community program run through the Redwood Community Centre and supported by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) and SecondBite. ‘Chewsday Bite’ is a weekly service that provides surplus fresh food (donated by farmers, wholesalers, supermarkets and caterers) to people in need.
The following day (4 December), Beyond Blue lunched with members of Ben’s Shed, Yarra Junction. Beyond Blue Ambassador Paul Walshe shared his story of depression and recovery with the group, which opened up a great discussion around mental health and keeping well. Ben’s Shed is a fixture in the local community and the guys were kind enough to offer to craft a bus letterbox out of wood (see photo gallery below) to take on the Roadshow!
In May 2015, after 15 months on the road, the big blue bus visited Healesville for the 'Connections Matter' community forum. Organised by the Lions Club of Healesville, over 200 people gathered at The Memo on 28 May to learn about the importance of social connections and maintaining good mental health and wellbeing.
Thanks to everyone who supported Beyond Blue’s visit and attended events! Thanks also to Medibank Community Fund for their support.
