After an amazing launch and few days in the ACT, the National Roadshow hit the highway to make a very special date in Sydney – the 36th annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade!
More than 50 Beyond Blue volunteers, including Ambassador Jason Ball, CEO Kate Carnell AO and Board Director Professor Michael Kidd AM accompanied a lit-up ‘Roadshow Rhonda’ down the parade route on 1 March, 2014. The rain didn’t deter the thousands of volunteers who marched in the parade and the hundreds of thousands of spectators who lined Oxford Street.
Beyond Blue is committed to raising awareness about the higher rates of depression and anxiety in lesbian, gay, bi, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people and helping to reduce the discrimination faced by LGBTI communities. (Read about our work here).
The Mardi Gras Parade coincided with other activities held in the Eastern Sydney Medicare Local region. On Sunday 2 March the bus set up at Bondi Pavilion for a beach activity day. Unfortunately, on this occasion, the rain did deter crowds. A washout was declared.
The following day, on 3 March, Roadshow Rhonda parked at another iconic Sydney location – Darling Harbour. It was great to see so many people pop by to pick up information about depression and anxiety, have a chat and find out more about Beyond Blue and local mental health services.
Thanks to the thousands of people who gave Beyond Blue such a warm welcome and the amazing Beyond Blue volunteers who marched in Mardi Gras! Thanks also to Medibank Community Fund for their support.
