In late May and early June 2014 the National Roadshow team visited a number of towns in WA’s mid west and also made a whirlwind trip to Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields.
The bus arrived in Kalgoorlie on 21 May, starting the day with a community breakfast in St Barbara’s Square. Centrecare Goldfields helped cook up a free breakfast for dozens of locals who stopped by the bus, including a trio of women planning to raise funds for Beyond Blue by riding 380km reinless to Rawlinna’s Nullarbor Muster in April 2015!
Following the breakfast, a business lunch was held in conjunction with the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Beyond Blue Deputy Chairman and WA Mental Health Commissioner Tim Marney spoke to business owners and managers in attendance, along with Regional CEO of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA Kitty Prodonovich.
That evening, a social night was held with Mates4Mates Goldfields at the Criterion Hotel. Many locals turned out for a fun evening and the opportunity to chat with Tim and pick up free information about mental health. Before heading back to Perth on 22 May, the bus stopped by Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School to talk to students about the importance of looking after their mental health.
After departing Perth in early June, the Roadshow headed north. After a quick stop at the local footy in Cervantes on 1 June, the bus arrived in Mullewa. A free healthy lunch and activity afternoon was held at Lesser Hall on 3 June. The WA Country Health Service helped to coordinate a number of fun activities including a polymer clay workshop and stone painting.
The following day the bus arrived in Geraldton and the Roadshow team attended the Deadly DivaZ Aboriginal women’s health and wellbeing day. Over 100 women were treated to free beauty and pamper sessions and provided information and services from several local health organisations.
On 4 June the bus parked on the sunny Geraldton foreshore for a mini health expo with Midwest Men’s Health, Women’s Health Resource Centre and Mission Australia. More than 150 locals dropped by to check out the information on offer. That afternoon the team set up at Northgate Shopping Centre to provide information to shoppers.
On Saturday 7 June the bus headed north along the coast to Kalbarri for another day on the foreshore. Member for Moore Shane Love MLA dropped by the bus to show his support and make a mental health pledge. The visit to the mid west wrapped up with a day in Carnarvon at the Civic Centre on 9 June.
Thanks to the wonderful communities who gave Beyond Blue such a warm welcome! Thanks also to Medibank Community Fund for their support.
