The big blue bus visited Victoria’s Great South Coast in April 2015.
First stop was Timboon’s Main Street on 23 April to provide locals with the opportunity to pick up free Beyond Blue information about mental health and staying well. That afternoon, the team headed up to the Cobden Football and Netball Club training night. Following training, about 80 people attended the club dinner to hear Beyond Blue Speaker Shane Kelton share his experience of anxiety, depression and recovery.
The following day, the bus visited Mortlake. The team set up in Market Square and the Lions Club helped cook up a free community barbecue. That evening, the bus attended Lismore’s ‘Are you right mate?’ mental health night. Guest speakers included actor, writer and comedian Jackson Tozer and Paralympian Don Elgin, who shared their entertaining and inspiring stories about overcoming adversity.
The Roadshow team were up early for the Anzac Day Dawn Service in Warrnambool. The centenary commemorations attracted a huge crowd to Cannon Hill and free cups of tea and Anzac biscuits at the bus helped warm hands through the drizzling rain.
On Sunday 26 April the bus set up at Gardens Oval in Port Fairy for the Hampden Football Netball League clash between the Port Fairy Seagulls and North Warrnambool Eagles. Free face painting and helium balloons at the bus were popular with the kids!
The following morning the team set up in Percy Street, Portland for a free community morning tea. The bus then headed to Heywood’s Edgar Street for the afternoon.
On 28 April the National Roadshow arrived in Hamilton and hosted a free community morning tea in Gray Street. The visit to the Great South Coast Medicare Local region wrapped up that afternoon with an afternoon tea at the Balmoral Bush Nursing Centre.
Thanks to all those who gave Beyond Blue such a warm welcome across the region. Thanks also to Medibank Community Fund for their support.
