The big blue bus arrived in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven region in February, 2015.
First stop was the Nowra Show on Saturday 7 February. Hundreds of people stopped by the bus to pick up a free showbag with information about mental health and staying well and to chat to the Beyond Blue team.
The following day, the Foragers Market in Bulli hosted the bus. In addition to the market’s fresh, local and handmade produce, shoppers had the chance to make a mental health pledge and take home free Beyond Blue resources.
On Monday 9 February the team helped out at Wollongong’s Homeless Hub. A free breakfast was provided along with information about local services and staying well. Following the breakfast the bus headed to Crown Street Mall for the afternoon. The team met up with ‘Byron Bay Ben’ – a young guy raising money for Beyond Blue by pounding the pavement around Australia. The day prior, Ben had jogged from Sydney to Wollongong to meet up with the bus! You can support Ben's efforts here.
On Tuesday, the bus headed south to Port Kembla for a visit to the Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation. Local families enjoyed a free community barbecue and play in the park.
On 11 February the Roadshow team stopped by the Men’s Shed at Sussex Inlet. Around 20 members enjoyed a free morning tea and learned more about the work of Beyond Blue. It was then on to Uladulla High School where Beyond Blue’s Bron Collins presented to around 800 students about the importance of taking care of their mental health.
Thanks to all those who gave Beyond Blue such a warm welcome. Thanks also to Medibank Community Fund for their support.
