The big blue bus arrived in Brisbane’s western corridor in October, 2014.
First stop was Fernvale for the weekly Sunday market on 19 October. More than 150 visitors to the market stopped by to pick up free Beyond Blue information and have a chat to Beyond Blue and Medicare Local staff.
St Edmund’s College in Ipswich received a visit on 21 October. Beyond Blue’s Bron Collins presented to hundreds of students about the importance of looking after their mental health and checking in on their mates. That afternoon, the bus rolled into the University of Southern Queensland’s Springfield campus to chat with staff and students and to provide free resources.
The following day the bus visited another campus – the University of Queensland in Gatton. Free blue cupcakes and an inflatable hayshed knockout ring attracted hundreds of students to the bus, with many filling out a mental health pledge (a written commitment or goal to achieve or maintain good mental health).
That evening – Wednesday 22 October – the team attended a local Mental Health Professionals Network meeting supported by the West Moreton-Oxley Medicare Local. Bron presented to attendees about the work of Beyond Blue as well as her own personal journey of hope, recovery and resilience following depression.
On 23 October the team attended Forest Lake State School’s Mental Health Awareness Day. A number of local services were present at the annual event to raise student's awareness of depression and anxiety and where to get help.
That afternoon, the team set up a stall at the Riverlink Shopping Centre in Ipswich to speak with shoppers and provide free information about mental health and staying well.
On Friday 24 October the Roadshow attended the opening night of Goodna’s Jacaranda Festival. The annual community event attracts thousands of people and features stalls, rides, games, talent quest and more. Federal Member for Oxley The Hon. Bernie Ripoll MP dropped by to say hello and make his mental health pledge.
The visit to the West Moreton-Oxley Medicare Local region wrapped up with a visit to Boonah on Saturday 25 October. The team set up a stall outside Ritchies IGA and spoke to nearly 100 people.
