Thank you for supporting Beyond Blue’s Perinatal Depression and Anxiety campaign. This campaign aims to raise awareness of perinatal depression and anxiety (PNDA), and to reduce stigma, increase education and generate conversations around this common mental health condition affecting new and expectant mums.
What is Perinatal Depression and Anxiety (PNDA)?
The term ‘perinatal’ refers to the period during pregnancy and the first year of a child’s life.
Research has shown that barriers to detecting and disclosing PNDA include lack of recognition of symptoms, denial, stigma, and feelings of shame, guilt or failure. With around 100,000 Australian families affected by perinatal anxiety and depression every year, this is a common mental health condition that does not discriminate.
How can you support the PNDA campaign?
- The term perinatal covers both the antenatal and postnatal periods. Antenatal depression or anxiety occurs during pregnancy, affecting up to one in 10 women in Australia. Up to one in six women experience postnatal depression or anxiety, which develops up to one year following childbirth.
- Some aspects of life as a new mum, such as sleep deprivation and increased stress, are risk factors that can lead to perinatal depression and anxiety. It is important to seek support early, as this condition generally won’t go away on its own.
- Separate from perinatal depression and anxiety, many women experience the ‘baby blues’ between the third and tenth day following childbirth, due to changes in hormone levels.
