Coronavirus and mental health in multicultural communities

COVID-19 has put everyone under pressure, so it’s more important than ever that we keep our minds healthy.

Beyond Blue has created a series of resources in a range of languages to help people in Australia understand how to find support and feel comfortable talking about their experiences.

Resources are available in Arabic, Mandarin/Simplified Chinese, Punjabi and Vietnamese.

As a leader in your community, we are asking for your help to share these new resources which provide support to people with managing their thoughts and feelings.

We know some people feel uncomfortable talking about this. By adding your voice to the campaign, you can set a powerful example, and make a big difference.

Goals

  • To share experiences and personal stories of people in Australia so that the wider community is better informed when it comes to mental health and;

  • To change the perspectives of listeners, by broadening their outlook on life and its relatable challenges.

Key messages

  • Beyond Blue’s Coronavirus Mental Wellbeing Support Service is offering information in your language that explains how to get support, and what to look out for.
  • We all feel sad, hopeless, helpless, stressed or upset sometimes, especially now, with so much happening in the world and to our families.
  • Talking is one of the best ways to get support. Do not let the fear of you or your family losing face stop you from speaking up.
  • If you feel sad, stressed or upset most of the time, for more than two weeks, it might be time to get support.
  • Trained counsellors are available to support you at any time, in English or with an interpreter in your preferred language.
  • For support, call the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) on 131 450 and ask for one of the following helplines:
    • Beyond Blue – 1800 512 348
    • Lifeline – 13 11 14
    • Kids Helpline – 1800 55 1800
  • If you are in an emergency or at immediate risk of harm to yourself or others, call 000.
