Research conducted by the Centre for Mental Health, The University of Melbourne
blueVoices members with experience of suicidal thoughts or behaviour (including those supporting loved ones with this experience) are invited to participate in a research project being conducted by the Centre for Mental Health at The University of Melbourne and funded by Beyond Blue. This project aims to identify key messages for a national suicide prevention media campaign to be conducted by Beyond Blue.
The aim of the media campaign would be to increase the likelihood that members of the general public, and in particular family members and friends, will:
- talk to someone who might be at risk of suicide about their suicidal thoughts
- help the suicidal person to stay safe
- assist the suicidal person to get the help they need.
This research is a very important part of developing the campaign because, while raising community awareness about suicide and equipping individuals to reach out to those at risk may help to address suicide, there is not a strong evidence base to guide the messaging in such a campaign. This project aims to assist in ensuring that any campaign has benefits and does not do harm.
