Activity Detail

The Beyond Blue Small Business Program is in its next phase - to determine the best approach to reach small business owners with workplace mental health information through intermediary channels.

This will be achieved by working directly with associations and professions who already have regular contact with small business owners (e.g. the ATO, accountants, business banking centres, small business mentors etc).

To ensure that this is developed in a way that is both useful and acceptable to all stakeholders, this project will be developed and driven in consultation with key small business intermediaries and small business owners.

We're seeking blueVoices members who are small business owners to take part in a focus group to test the concepts and messaging that come out of the consultation with small business intermediaries.

The focus group will be held in early June via video conference. It will take around 1 hour and participants will receive a gift voucher as a thank you for their time. Some pre-reading will be involved but shouldn't take more than 20 minutes.

Following this consultation period a formal steering committee will be formed to drive and guide the development of this capacity building project and external reference group to assist in the review process. blueVoices members will also be invited to take part in this committee.

Background

The Beyond Blue Small Business Program aims to increase the number of small business owners taking action to improve mental health in their workplace. With these actions specifically focused on creating a mentally healthy workplace, as well as small business owners taking care of their own mental health.

Activity to date includes:

  • The small business pages of the Heads Up website have been reviewed by small business owners and have been revised to better reflect their experiences and information needs. The Heads Up website was re-launched in August 2017 with these changes incorporated.
  • New content has been developed for small business owners
    • Healthy workplaces for small businesses
    • Mental health and small business owners
    • Looking after yourself as a small business owner
    • Managing others – for small business owners
    • Resources for small businesses
  • Six video case studies have been developed with small business owners, which include real life practical tips and strategies on how to keep yourself and your small business mentally healthy.

The next phase of this project is to work directly with associations and professions who already have regular contact with small business owners (e.g. the ATO, accountants, business banking centres, small business mentors etc), to determine the best approach to reach small business owners with workplace mental health information through these intermediary channels.

To ensure that this is developed in a way that is both useful and acceptable to all stakeholders, this project will be developed and driven in consultation with key small business intermediaries and small business owners.
