Activity Detail

Help Beyond Blue create Australia’s first mental health support service tailored to the needs of small business owners.

We have multiple opportunities available including positions on an advisory group, interviews and/or testing of initial ideas to guide the design and delivery of the service.

You may choose to express your interest in one or all of these activities. See details about the project below and fill out the form at the bottom of the page to express your interest. You'll receive remuneration or a gift card as a thank you for your time depending on the activity.

These consultations will start from next week and through mid-December, so we are seeking expressions of interest immediately. Where necessary and possible, we'll offer times to participate outside of business hours. 

About the project 

One third of small business owners report having high levels of psychological distress, often due to long working hours, social isolation, customer demands, cash flow issues and conflicting demands between home and work. 

The coronavirus pandemic has likely increased these issues, with recent reports of two thirds of small business owners reporting that the pandemic has had a negative impact on their mental health.

In October 2020, Beyond Blue was provided $4.257m funding through the 2020 federal Budget to establish NewAccess for Small Business, a national mental health coaching service specifically for small business owners.

To do this, we need the help of the small business community.

Community members involved in this project will have:

  • Past or current small business owner experience (through their experience and/or the experience of someone close to them.
  • An understanding of the issues small business owners face.

Ideally, all participants will be able to provide insight into the things that may help or hinder access to mental health and wellbeing support among small business owners.

About NewAccess for Small Business

NewAccess for Small Business seeks to support the mental health and wellbeing of small business owners and prevent problems from getting worse. Beyond Blue has over 10 years of experience delivering our current NewAccess program, which will now evolve into the first mental health support service specifically designed for small business owners.

We have the following opportunities available:

1. Advisory group

We’re looking to appoint two community members to sit on an advisory panel to guide the development and delivery of the service. Members will bring their experience as small business owner to help Beyond Blue understand how the NewAccess program can best support the mental health and wellbeing of small business owners. 

The Advisory Group will meet fortnightly until the commencement of the service (expected early 2021), and monthly thereafter until June 2021. Community members will be remunerated for their time.

2. Interviews (closed – spots now filled)

We're looking for 10 small business owners to be involved in 60 minute interviews via teleconference between 16 and 27 November. The interviews will be run by an external researcher and will explore what helps and hinders small business owners from seeking mental health support when running a business.

Participants will receive a $60 gift voucher as a thank you for their time.

3. User testing

We’re also looking for 12 small business owners to test initial ideas of what the NewAccess for Small Business program might look like in the week commencing 14 December. This will help us further shape and refine the service to best meet the needs of the small business community.

Run by an external researcher, the user testing will take approximately 60 minutes and will be held via videoconference. Participants will receive a $60 gift voucher as a thank you for their time.

To be considered for these opportunities, please complete the expression of interest form below. The New Access for Small Business project team will review all expressions of interest after the closing date and contact shortlisted applicants.

How will we use your responses? 

  • Any personal information provided by you will be collected and used in accordance with Beyond Blue’s Privacy Policy which can be viewed at https://www.beyondblue.org.au/general/privacy-policy.
  • As we have an external researcher (Behavioural Insights Team) assisting with this project, we will ask you whether or not you give us permission to share your responses with them in the form below.

Please note: You can express your interest in one or more of these activities. If you're involved in more than one activity, you'll receive reimbursement/gifts for each activity as specified above. Due to the high volume of interest we generally receive for these types of activities, unfortunately we will not be able to select everyone to be involved.
