“I was horrified to think that I looked like I wasn’t coping. It meant I had to work harder on the façade. This was a big mistake, as it cost me many years of poor mental health.”

Paul’s demanding police career took a turn when he was exposed to a traumatic event, which triggered hopelessness, anxiety and a growing fear of being judged.

Tragically, Paul attempted to end his life multiple times. The last attempt took him straight to intensive care.

For years, Paul resisted questions and offers of help from his family and colleagues – as well as his own growing sense that something was not right. When he finally had the first of many crucial conversations, it was over the phone, in tears, "I need to speak to a counsellor, I'm in trouble."

Thanks to supporters like you, people will always be able to talk things through with a trained mental health professional, through the Beyond Blue Support Service.

With your support, we can continue to answer phone calls, web chats and emails and ensure everyone gets the right information, advice or referral at the right time.

Beyond Blue's Support Service and programs like the Speakers Bureau are crucial to helping us achieve our vision of every person in Australia achieving their best possible mental health.
