BeyondNow – Your suicide safety planning app

What is safety planning?

If you or someone close to you is experiencing suicidal thoughts or feelings, safety planning can help you get through the tough moments. 

It involves creating a structured plan – ideally with support from your health professional or someone you trust – that you work through when you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts, feelings, distress or crisis.

Your safety plan starts with things you can do by yourself, such as thinking about your reasons to live and distracting yourself with enjoyable activities. It then moves on to coping strategies and people you can contact for support – your friends, family and health professionals.

While everyone’s plan will be unique to them, the process and structure are the same – it prompts you to work through the steps until you feel safe.

What is Beyond Now?

Convenient and confidential, the Beyond Now app puts your safety plan in your pocket so you can access and edit it at any time. You can also email a copy to trusted friends, family or your health professional so they can support you when you're experiencing suicidal thoughts or heading towards a suicidal crisis. 

Beyond Now is free to download from the Apple Store or Google Play. If you don’t have a smartphone or would prefer to use your desktop or laptop, Beyond Now is also available to use online.

Beyond Now is designed to be used as part of your overall mental wellbeing and safety strategy. It is not intended to be your only form of support. Ideally you should work with a health professional or support person to create your plan.

Joel's experience with safety planning

I think it's really important to raise visibility of mental health issues particularly it in the LGBTIQA community. When I was struggling with my mental health I had no idea where to start, so I think that the Beyond Now app is a really great initiative. If you or someone close to you is experiencing suicidal thoughts or feelings, safety planning can help you get through the tough moments.

For a long time I lived a double life. I was a woman at work and a male  on weekends.

Nic's experience with safety planning

Nic created his first safety plan three years ago with the support of his psychologist. He's used it a number of times since to stay safe. When he's going through a difficult time, referring to his list of all the positive things in his life helps Nic appreciate what he's got to look forward to. He also finds it reassuring to know he's got a team of friends and professionals on hand when he needs them – "they always pull through for me."

My safety plan now includes music, watching certain shows, or certain episodes of shows, that pretty much pick me up.


Beyond Now was developed by Beyond Blue and Monash University in collaboration with people who have experience with suicidal thoughts or a suicidal crisis.
