The Australian Government's Department of Defence launched the Defence Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2018-2023 in October 2017. The strategy focuses on increasing awareness and decreasing stigma around mental health across the organisation and improving support for all Defence personnel with mental health issues.
To support the Strategy, Defence has engaged with Beyond Blue to commission the NewAccess Defence service for all its employees.
NewAccess Defence service is only available to current employees of the Department of Defence (full and part-time Australian Defence Force and Australian Public Service personnel).

Contact a NewAccess Defence coach
NewAccess is a free and confidential service that provides six free sessions with a specifically trained NewAccess Defence Coach. At your first appointment, your Coach will complete an initial assessment with you and develop a program tailored to your needs.
Coaches are also well connected in the community and can link you with relevant support groups to address employment, financial, education, housing and/or other concerns.
The service is provided to all Defence personnel Australia wide, and to those serving internationally. Coaches are accessible over the phone and various video-conferencing methods, whichever is most convenient for you.
NewAccess is not a crisis service. If you feel you require immediate support or advice, please call the Beyond Blue Support Service 24/7 on 1300 22 4636. If it’s an emergency, or you’re at immediate risk of harm to yourself or others, please call 000.

I found the world’s best wingman. I felt that he [NewAccess coach] had my back. In the beginning I felt that I could barely get through each day waiting for our next appointment. But like all good wingmen, he did not make me dependent, he just let me know he was there, gave me a couple of nudges in the right direction, and flew beside me.
