I understand your replies but it still does not answer my question.  This is not about God or not God. To me that's a different issue.

'original matter that started this evolution process'.  Fine! Where did the original matter come from.  I have never found anyone who can tell me how the original matter formed, which seems to have appeared from nothing. Similarly gravity. Gravity does not exist without a body of matter to have a gravity.

Once you have matter, of any description, then the formation of worlds etc is inevitable. Not a problem.  But the constant message I hear is that life evolved from matter of some description. Whether it was a big bang, gravity or God, or any other mechanism is not the point. Where did the original matter that started this whole process come from?

I too have watched countless "begining of the universe" programs and read all sorts of theories and authors such as Dawkins, but none of them can explain the origin of matter. It is assumed it was "there" in some magical way, just as the explanation of God says God was "there". Perhaps I am being too pedantic, but I fail to see how something comes from literally nothing.

Sorry to keep on about this. I shall blame John for starting the conversation.  But it really is fascinating how we are ready to accept that world/universe etc began, either by creation or the formation of worlds via evolution in whatever broad sense you want, and yet not wonder or seek to find where the original seed came from.

Then instead of addressing this question we fight amongst ourselves about which theory is correct  Since we do not know, and I accept scientific proof of evolution and age of the universe, why not just accept that the universe is, and get on with life?

I agree with you both , yes Geoff , just theories and beliefs. Mary loved your last sentence! Thanks must go to John for getting me thinking about something dfferent - need that these days!

Must say I’ve only just found this thread and am really enjoying it.  It could really snowball into something awesome I think – with others coming on and posing their own questions and basically about “anything”.  It doesn’t have to be about creation of life or whatever, but at this moment in time it is.  I do have other things to raise, but will leave that for a post a bit further down the track.  In the meantime, I’ve got three things to mention, of which two are of, tongue-in-cheek nature and the other is a serious question – I will leave it up to the reader to work out which is which.

2. On the previous page there was talk about agnostics, dogs and gods which leads me to say:  “Did you hear about the dyslexic, agnostic insomniac? He stayed up all night wondering if there really was a dog. “  (possibly could have gone in the Worst Joke Wednesday part);  &

3. I know next to nothing about religion, except from what I’ve learnt in the Supernatural series (awesome by the way), but my question or statement refers to this.  Do we all know about the cave-men, etc?  You know, cro-magnon man and how he hunted and stuff and was a bit bent-over, I think, as he hadn’t fully evolved to standing tall and straight.  Now was “he &  she” the first known humans on earth;  or was it Adam and Eve?    And just stemming from that, did God create Eve by plucking a rib out of Adam??

I guess what I’m getting at here is whether there were two lots of humans in existence around the same time?    Perhaps on one side of the world there were/was Adam and Eve;  and on the other side, intermingled with a whole host of sabre-toothed tigers and such, were the Cro-Magnon man and woman.

Am I way off track here?

From what I have read it appears that a number of different groups of humans are being "found".  It is quite probable that some of the DNA of all theses tribes, for want of a better collective noun, can be found in our current population. I find this quite fascinating.

It also appears that we can trace our humanity back, via DNA, to an original woman in Africa. Can't say the same for an original man though. Precisely how this has been accomplished and proven is beyond my grasp of science but I am willing to take the scientists word for it. After all our evolution had to have some form of common denominator.

In terms of population groups existing at the same time in different parts of the world Neil, this is what I understand happened. These groups either failed to thrive and so died out or they integrated with other groups. Don't know. It does appear that humans as we know ourselves now, did originate in Africa.  The current widespread divergence of shape, size and colour is mainly due to climate. eg dark skin to combat exposure to sun, retention of hair to keep warm, eye shape and skin folds to protect against the wind. Also the adaptation of body shape and size due to the available type of food.

Geoff, it's amazing how long life can remain dormant until the right conditions trigger the next stage of development. Just a small amount of moisture underground can sustain frog spawn until the rains come.

Life in all its varieties is amazing and tenacious, adaptive and creative. Those species that do not adapt die out. So like all of us, it's a case of change or die.

What is our next incarnation?

By the way, I heard a quote the other day which I found quite scary. Can't remember who said it, but then I never can. The quote is, "The internet is the only invention of man that we do not understand"  I have no idea what is meant by not understanding. Sounds quite menacing though.
