Rob: I found Max Boyce's Duw it's Hard reminded me very much of a movie I've enjoyed several times called Brassed Off about Grimethorpse' Colliery Band following the closure of the pit and hence the town. Probably the stills in the music video did this.

With Madam Bassey I guess This Is My Life is as good as Sinatra's Did it My Way. Is there a particular one of her works you prefer?

Dottie: I always thought there were two sorts of students at uni - When they asked "Where is building A, I've got a tut?" I'd say "Well you go down to the Library and turn left, then it's right in front of you."

If I got a puzzled blank look I'd backtrack and say " If you go down to the Student Union Bar, hang a right and you'll see it." Then I'd see comprehension dawn.

I was wrong, there is a third sort to whom I'd have to say" Go down there, keep the Concert Hall to your right and you'll see it."

Now I wonder what inspired my re-think:)

I listened to more than just two of DJ Okawari's tracks, I think you might have chosen the best already. Piano, beat, plus orchestra later - sounds a familiar format. I think I remember something similar from something you said a while ago now.

I was tired this morning and ordered my coffee at the cafe in a nearby town. I must have been tired because I said, Ga i disgled o goffi gwyn, plis. And she said, I'll get it for you now and in a minute love. That woke me up somewhat.

Re Tiger Bay: I met Hayley some years ago...and became good friends with her relatives here....amazing memories!

Did you know the "little girl" in Tiger Bay was going to be a boy? then the director who was a friend of her dad John Mills saw Hayley playing in their garden and was so captivated by her, he turned the character into a little girl instead. It was her first film, she was 12.

Rob: I'm not sure it was that peacful at the time. Not everyone was delighet at my actions:(

Moon: Apologies for the delay getting back to you, have been interstate. I enjoyed that film, because it seemed to me to be a pretty good snapshot of Cardiff at that time. I thought JM as the super was good, but the sailor turning back at the end a bit unrealistic.

Interesting what you said about Haley. Was she nice? Many child actors get a bit spoilt.

Hayley is a gorgeous woman...inside and out. She remained quite unspoilt as a child actor - and her family really didn't ask for or encourage the Hollywood/Disney hype that saw her adored by heaps of young people...boys and girls. Underneath, many of our "big stars" are delightfully normal....flawed and human , just like us! (just usually more photogenic!)

Of course the young sailor at the end had to dive in to save the little girl....movie wouldn't have had a proper "ending" if he hadn't would it? Besides, it fitted in with the closing theme music!

Yes there was a picture of her in her Blue Angel costume in the back of a history book, as a young impressionable schoolboy it thought it most attractive - still do now I come to think of it.

Yes Croix I know the photograph you mean. She had black stockings and suspenders on didn't she? Co-incidentally I've had to wear them too upon occasion when playing bowls and also look quite good in them if I do say so myself! Didn't she also have a sort of black bowler hat on in that photo?

Don't think she was famous for her bowling though....I do recall she was in Witness For The Prosecution.

(I also agree with you about Diana R. I thought she was gorgeous and used to love that show when I was very young. "Mrs Peel....we're needed".)

Moon: Oh yes - the bowler hat - I knew there was a connection.

Actually there's another coincidence, Steed always wore one - as did Mother. I fondly remember when The Avengers came out - 1961 I think. I'm not sure if Mrs Peel or Mrs Gale is my favorite. Perhaps the former as she did both serious and light.

Actuality it's a bit sad, some of the early episodes that I recall had been wiped by the Beeb and are no longer in existence. Just to save a little tape - sigh. There are a number of shows like that. The Beeb has a web page listing lost episodes from various show they hope will turn up from somewhere.

Dottie: You have a talent for picking artists that make melancholy sound good. Queen's Show Must Go On is excellent. As you say "Gotta love Queen". The lyrics - as usual - had something to resonate:

It reminded me of something that may not appeal to you so much: Mark Knopfler - What It Is, with good guitar though the pace is slower, it's still about the human condition (with a Scotts flavour). He does another about workers forced to leave Maggie Thatcher's Britain, forget the name.

One of our minor TV channels ran The Avengers each Sunday morning...could still be on I'm not sure. Yes of course Steed wore a bowler hat too! I met him once (Patrick McNee)...was touring here in a comedy stage show. He had the reddest nose I'd ever seen! We never used to see that on TV did we?

Even though lyrics is not necessarily the single biggest draw card for me when it comes to music, I do appreciate relatable lyrics.

I definitely appreciated Queen's Show Must Go On lyrics. A deceptively grand song but upon closer inspection, it's actually sad. Like a lot of people...it's a clever song.

As for missing my post - you didn't (obviously) - but it does remind me of when I was last seriously studying I tended to spread myself too thin and did miss a question once - did not matter in the end, the lecturer was understanding (so hard to chip alterations in the stone tablets we had to use back in those days)

That reminds me even further back when I did a year of psychology - never went any further because I dropped out at that time, when I went back years later I steered clear of the subject - seemed a tad dry.

Semester I -Elementary Statistical Methods.
Semester II - Statistics for Psychology.
Even had to buy myself a special calculator

I dunno what they had in year 2 -Advanced Stats probably.

On another subject went and saw Ghost in the Shell. This is SciFi which I know you are not keen on, the reason I mention it is because of the graphics. It is a visual feast, portraying city, advertisements, technology with imagination and attention to detail. The last time I saw such imagination was in Blade Runner.

Shouldn't talk about movies during semester, I'm a bad influence I guess :)

Don't know what to say.

That's the beauty sometimes...we don't have to "know" what to say sometimes and that's okay.

Stats is like a package deal with psych haha. Psych isn't for everyone and I think especially in undergrad, every psych student sort of becomes a jack of all trades (expert in none haha).

Like, we get small doses of different psych topics (with heavier focus on good old stats and some biopsych) but you don't really get to pursue your particular interest area unless you complete postgrad (and postgrad psych is notoriously competitive).

I'm actually curious about Ghost in the Shell. Might actually check it out some time 😊 Thanks for the recommendation.

Ghost in the Shell is interesting, for a start Scarlett Johansson is made up to look vaguely Japanese.

We normally see Marvel Comics translated into film (Batman, Capt America etc etc) .

This film is from Japanese manga instead, which gives it a rather different slant. Sort of Power Rangers meets Lara Croft. The Seinen Manga franchise, of which this is an episode, started around 1989 and is apparently still going.

Don't expect great plot or dialogue, all stuff that has been done before - evil conglomerate, humans as cyborgs, shoot everything in sight, staunch companion, happy ending - and so on. It's simply the richness of the visual experience that made me enjoy, a fair bit of thought went into it, even down to a novel use of 3-D printing.

Hello Mr Croix and hello to all.

You asked me a question regarding my profile picture Mr Croix....

Well first I really desired a change from the other one in the girl and the two little children in the wheel barrow. I do like that, just felt like a change.

So I googled old fashioned signs and pictures. This one really stuck out to me for a few reasons. One being I liked the overall look, the colour and the flowers in the corner. I am unsure whether some person has embroidered the message and the flowers. But it appeared that way to me and I like homey looking things like that.

I guess the main reason though is I wanted others to read it in hope they would feel or be encouraged in some way. If they only heard those words, perhaps when they were younger we'll maybe it would have made a difference. I guess it is like acceptance in a way. Accepting people for who they are sort of thing.

Anyway as I kept and keep seeing it every time I post, well I believe it is for me also. Because I just have an ache somewhere deep within to know what this feels like. To know the experience of someone being proud of me. To be honest I don't even know if it is a feeling.

I hope I explained it okay Mr Croix.

Thankyou for popping in to give me feedback on my entry on your other thread; Store Your Happy Memories Here.

My Nan was a tortured soul, but a sweetheart. The odd things we remember have been discussed quite a few times with my sisters. But when we come across a memory we all share, the banter creates a whole picture. Comments such as; "Oh, I'd forgotten that!" is reiterated a few times.

I have so many unpleasant memories from childhood, remembering the happy one's is something you've challenged me with. I'm very grateful.

I see your thread's going well here; I hope it serves the purpose of its original beginnings.
