Perinatal Depression

Postnatal depression (PND) affects about 16 per cent of women who give birth and recent evidence suggests that many women may in fact be depressed during their pregnancy (approximately 9%).  Despite the prevalence and consequences of depression occurring antenatally and postnatally, most women commonly remain unidentified and untreated.

The beyondblue National PND Research Program presented a unique opportunity to increase our knowledge about the prevention and management of antenatal and postnatal mood disorders. In addition, it enabled a variety of health professionals and self-help organisations to provide information to the public and media about these and other relevant issues.

The four year research project involved over 40,000 pregnant women and 12,000 new mothers in 43 health services across Australia.

The final report on the research program is available here in two volumes to download:

Pets and Animal Therapy

Research around the world has suggested that pet ownership and attachment can provide therapeutic benefit and enhanced emotional status.

To read about pets and their effect on mental and physical health download our research Issues Paper here.

Same Sex Attracted (Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual)

Health problems of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people are different from those of heterosexual people.  The degree to which same-sex attracted people experience mental health issues compared with heterosexual young people can be significantly higher.

To read about mental health, depression and anxiety in same-sex attracted people download our research Issues Paper here.

Mental Health and Depression in Elite Athletes

Injury, training, perfectionism, self esteem and weight concerns can all have an impact on the mental health and wellbeing of elite athletes.  To read about these issues download our research Issues Paper here.
