Illustration for Men's Mental Health - Depression

Key takeaways

  • Mental health struggles are common for men and show up in different ways, including stress, anger, withdrawal or feeling overwhelmed.

  • Challenges linked to ADHD can affect self-esteem, emotional wellbeing and mood over time.

  • Difficulty concentrating, low motivation and sleep problems can be signs of either condition.

  • ADHD symptoms usually begin in childhood, while depression can develop at any stage of life.

  • Getting the right diagnosis can help you access the most effective treatment and support.

All men experience stress at different times in their lives.

It could be feeling overwhelmed by a busy work schedule, or struggling with money problems, or feeling nervous before giving a speech at a wedding. This type of "normal" stress is part of life and usually passes when the situation is overcome or goes away.

But anxiety is different. Anxiety is the fear that something terrible is going to happen.

  • Your worries "snowball" and you see catastrophes in everyday situations

  • Your worries make you feel panicked, tense, or on edge

  • Your worries stop you from getting the sleep you need

  • Your worries prevent you from doing normal things

Anxiety can be a serious condition, but you don’t need to let it control you. Like depression, anxiety is treatable.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of anxiety, it’s important to get support so you can start to get better. Have a chat to your GP or keep reading to explore ways to manage your mental health and wellbeing.

Checking in with your habits can help keep gaming in the helpful zone, rather than letting it crowd out the things that support your wellbeing.

Signs of a health relationship

  • You both feel emotionally and physically safe
  • You can communicate openly and honestly, and you both listen with care
  • There is trust and reliability – you can count on each other
  • Boundaries are understood and respected
  • Conflict is handled calmly and fairly, with a focus on repair rather than blame
  • You both feel supported, valued and encouraged
  • You both keep your independence, including friends, interests and space to grow
  • You can be yourselves without fear of judgement
  • There’s mutual respect, including respect for each other’s needs, goals and identity
  • You share affection, appreciation and small moments of connection

If you didn’t tick every box, that’s OK. Noticing what feels off is a really important first step.

Support is available, whether you're looking for help for yourself, a young person in your life, or guidance as a parent or carer.

There are many ways to get support:

  • Talk to someone you trust about what you're experiencing.

  • Make an appointment with your GP to discuss how gaming and your mental health may be affecting each other.

  • Reach out to a mental health professional or support service for advice and support.
