Activity Detail

Thank you for your interest in providing feedback and sharing your Defence Force experience. The following questions relate to an existing low-stigma, early intervention service that Beyond Blue is looking to expand.

For privacy and confidentiality reasons we cannot name the service but will refer to it as 'the service' for this consultation.

Over 6,000 people have used the service nationally, we are now trying to expand the reach of the service to support more Australians. We know it is effective and promotes recovery with an independent evaluation showing a 67.8% recovery rate.

Information about the service

Beyond Blue has developed an evidence-based, low-intensity, early intervention service to support people who may be experiencing mild to moderate depression and/or anxiety.

The service provides up to six free guided, self-help sessions delivered by a specifically trained coach. It's a confidential, practical and action-oriented service that does not use medical jargon, diagnose or label people. Sessions can occur face-to-face, over the phone, via Skype or FaceTime.

Using Low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy the service identifies the key cause of the mental health concern. A plan is then developed to tackle this using proven Cognitive Behavioural Therapy strategies.

The strategies developed during the coaching sessions are put into practice and consolidated through the completion of homework tasks.

The service is easy to access in that individuals can 'self-refer' - meaning no GP referral or other consultation is required. Additionally, the service can receive referrals from family members, friends and organisations with consent from the individual who requires support.

We need your help to better understand

  • the best way to communicate with Australian Defence Force (ADF), including Australian Public Service (APS), personnel and Veterans who may need this service

  • how Beyond Blue can increase awareness of the service amongst ADF including APS personnel and Veterans

We are interested in hearing your thoughts and experience accessing mental health supports in the ADF.

Responses will be provided anonymously to the project team at Beyond Blue. Your responses are confidential and you will not be identified.
