Olympic snowboarder and Beyond Blue Ambassador Belle Brockhoff hit the slopes at Mount Buller on August 8 as part of a Beyond Blue day on the mountain.
The 22-year-old spent the afternoon at a Beyond Blue marquee that was set up in the Village Square throughout the day, offering free Beyond Blue information.
Along with fielding requests for snowboarding tips, Belle chatted with visitors about her experience of depression and anxiety as a teenager, to help break down stigma by showing these conditions don’t discriminate, and can affect even the strongest athletes.
Three young girls were fortunate enough to carve up the snow with Belle, after winning a competition on the day to take part in a snowboarding session with her.
At the marquee, there was also a performance in the afternoon from former X Factor runner-up Andrew Wishart and $2 hot chocolates sold to support Beyond Blue.
In the evening, the Beyond Blue activities continued with a fun night out at the Moosehead Bar and Bistro, downstairs at the ABOM Hotel and Restaurant. Andrew Wishart returned to provide live music, while Fox FM Breakfast Host Dave Thorton performed stand-up comedy. The event had a $5 entry fee, with all funds raised going to Beyond Blue.
Beyond Blue CEO Georgie Harman said the day was a fantastic opportunity for Beyond Blue to raise awareness of depression and anxiety and the importance of maintaining good mental health among people visiting Mt Buller.
“Like skiing and snowboarding, life can also involve obstacles, but looking after your mental health and seeking support early if you’re struggling can help make navigating these bumps easier.
“All money raised on the day will help us continue our important work supporting people with depression and anxiety and their families, including the Beyond Blue Support Service which is available by phone 24/7 on 1300 22 4636 or via webchat (3PM-midnight AEST) or email at www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support.
“Beyond Blue is grateful to Buller Ski Lifts and Mt Buller Resort Management for supporting this event, and to the fantastic Belle Brockhoff for being involved. By continually sharing her story, Belle is helping to break down stigma around depression and anxiety.”
