Beyond Blue
joins countless others in marking the passing of Jackie Crowe, and celebrating her extraordinary life and contribution.
Whether as a mum and partner, National Mental Health Commissioner, small business owner or professional peer worker supporting families, Jackie brought light and love into people’s lives.
She stared down discrimination, stood up for the rights of people and families affected by mental health issues and suicide, and gave voice to millions.
Jackie never said ‘no’ when we asked for her expert insights and some of her time. She was a long-term and active member of blueVoices, Beyond Blue's
community of people with personal experience of depression, anxiety and suicidality. She was instrumental in the design, implementation and evaluation of many Beyond Blue
programs and services. She was generous with her time and always forthright in her advice and opinions.
Jackie had a rare combination of being in touch with the real lives and challenges of people and families affected by mental health conditions and suicide, and an ability to communicate and advocate at the most conceptual and strategic levels. She never lost sight of what was happening on the ground and used her positions and influence to champion them and demand that we all do better.
Jackie was at her finest when she came to talk to the Beyond Blue
team earlier this year. She set out her expectations of us and our work, and challenged us with her trademark feistiness and respect, rounded off with an infectious giggle.
Jackie’s loss is profound, but we celebrate all that she stood for and the positive impact she had on the lives of so many Australians.
Beyond Blue
extends our deepest sympathies to Jackie’s family and friends.
