Beyond Blue Financial Wellbeing Program

[0:00 Dr Grant Blashki]

the best way that I think about it is

people who aren't under financial pressure, it's like they're riding on their bike and the wind is blowing behind them and everything is possible

and everything seems easy and they don't really have a sense of what it's like for someone when they're riding against the wind

[0:18 Victoria Devine]

when I talk to people about their financial struggles

the biggest thing that stands out to me is that we tie so closely our net worth to whatour self-worth is

[0:27 Rebecca]

it was 2001 the Ansett collapsed

so it was two months after 9 11.

and at the time I wasn't expecting it

I wasn't prepared for it and it was definitely a shock

it was a shock to all of us and within oh gosh I think a week we were all signed up for the dole

[0:54 Peter]

and it was particularly hard because we were quite comfortable financially you know

we had a good house we had a mortgage but we were coping with it quite well you know

had the kids in the whole bit and then

to lose literally everything including

your income and to have virtually

nothing except the clothes on your back

and a small bag of personals was really really hard

[1:16 Martin]

burnt through all my savings on basic

rent and stuff and they ended up going

into debt to my housemates

because I couldn't sustain myself

[1:28 Dr Grant Blashki]

finding a sense of

motivation to actually get back into

things can be quite hard you know

there's a lot of sort of negative

self-talk you know regret guilt perhaps

sense of Shame you know there's a lot of

these sort of things so turning around

those sort of thoughts can take a bit of

time and you need to be really gentle with yourself

[1:51 Lody Sterwart]

when people find out that

there are options and there is help

available there is a sense of relief and

there is a sense of not feeling so alone

in all of this that you know there is help available

particularly that they're not going to be judged

for the circumstances that they find themselves in

[2:15 Peter]

what I learned is when I'm going through difficulty

what is that difficulty

how is it affecting me and what can I do

to get myself out of that negative mental space

[2:30 Rebecca]

I knew that you know

this will pass this too shall pass you

know we went out for a walk and got out in the sunshine

[2:32 Martin]

the hardest thing is opening that first window

even it's even if it's a little a little bit

[2:40 Lody Stewart]

that that is yeah you built

you build that in them that that

fight and that it's amazing to watch people go from

feeling so helpless and almost like a

victim to being I can do this my life is

going to change it's going to be so much better
