Coping with loneliness at Christmas

Christmas can feel lonely if you’re missing someone – or don’t celebrate the holidays at all.

It can also be hard when relationships aren’t what you hoped for.

When everyone seems joyful and there’s pressure to make everything perfect, it’s easy for feelings of loneliness to build up. But there are ways to make this time feel lighter.

Popular ideas include planning ahead – so you know what support you’ll have.

While reaching out to someone who’s also having a solo Christmas can be good for both you and them.

And whatever you do, make sure you’re being kind to yourself.

If you feel up to it, join a local event or volunteer group. The Meetup website has lots of ideas and events that might be of interest.

You can even make up your own tradition and just do something you love – just for you.

However you spend your Christmas holidays, remember you don’t have to go through feelings of loneliness alone.

We’re here for you 24/7 if you want someone to talk to.

You’ll also find plenty of conversations going on in our forums.

"I felt like I’d been believed for the first time... it was really refreshing to have that support from someone, especially an actual professional.

It was nice to finally feel like I wasn’t alone."
