About NewAccess

NewAccess is a free mental health coaching program, designed to provide accessible, quality services for anyone finding it hard to manage life stress.

The program uses Low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy practices and aims to help people break the cycle of negative or unhelpful thoughts.

Background

We know that millions of people in Australia do not access support to manage the way they feel when they need it.

In addition, mental health services are swamped by demand and early support programs are limited.

This is where NewAccess is playing such a crucial role.

After 10+ years of research and development including a three-year trial in Australia and independent evaluation, today the NewAccess program is giving thousands of people in Australia the practical tools to manage unhelpful thoughts and get back on track.

NewAccess is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health via Primary Health Networks (PHNs) across Australia, who commission service providers to deliver NewAccess in their region.

NewAccess snapshot

  • More than 8,000 people have been through the program since 2013
  • 68% of people who go through the program recover
  • 70% of people complete the program
  • Approximately 6.4 million people in Australia have access to the program
  • Currently funded by 12 Primary Health Networks

NewAccess Coaches

NewAccess Coaches are trained in Low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy by CBT Institute to help develop and guide participants through their tailored program.

Low-intensity Cognitive Based Therapy is a structured, evidence based psychological treatment. Put simply, it allows us to recognise the way we think, act and feel.

NewAccess Coaches work alongside participants on a problem, develop an understanding of what is causing distress, and guide the use of tools and strategies can be used in day-to-day life.

Coaches undertake twelve months of training, starting with a six-week intensive that then moves to practical learning. This involves managing clients and an ongoing curriculum under specialist supervision.

This training was rigorously tested in the Beyond Blue 2013-16 NewAccess pilot is being utilised across 17 sites in Australia currently providing NewAccess.

A clinical supervision framework sits across the service and workforce, ensuring that NewAccess Coaches are never without clinical supervision.

The program has assisted me greatly in crystallising some thoughts and feelings, tackling complete issues in my life in a positive way, drawing on strengths and changing thinking habits that were unhelpful to me and to others.
